The Contempora 2008 Sculpture Award & Festival of Public Arts, proudly sponsored by the City of Melbourne and VicUrban, is a prestigious Australian arts event staged each year along the waterfront areas of the rapidly expanding Melbourne Docklands precinct.

The Contempora Exhibition comes to Melbourne, and specifically the Docklands, for the third time.

Contempora has almost earnt the traditional tag.

I thank specifically the artists who make Contempora possible. Without their creative juices, hard work and goodwill, these wonderful installations which we are all able to enjoy would not have been possible.

I also thank our Sponsors, the established and the new, for their extraordinary support. I am sure you will find your investment well worthwhile for your own benefit as well as for the broader community.

Contempora, public art through sculpture, is a wonderful concept and I expect tens of thousands of people will visit the exhibition before it concludes in late April.

I know Contempora has worked when I see young children touching and climbing on the installations, ignoring the pleas not to do so. Who knows which of them will be the next Rodin?
