This is the first of a series of outdoor
sculpture exhibitions to take place at Docklands. The works
have been selected to present a review of recent sculpture
by established and new emerging artists. They address a range
of concerns, many relating to the relationship between man
and the natural environment, adapting different aesthetic
directions. I have located the works in sites along the Promenade,
in the laneways and inside restaurants at New Quay to create
a pathway through the area.
Passion, dedication and compulsion are all part of the background
of the sculptor. These sculptors challenge accepted ideas
and their use of such a range of materials result in the development
of large works which confront the mind, as well as, delight
and enthrall the viewer.
This exhibition is a way of introducing artists to the area,
permitting them to experience the unique spaces of this spectacular
venue. An important step, many have not had the opportunity
to participate in such a large project. They come to Docklands
and can feel the excitement in the buildings being created
by architects, developers and planners, who are changing this
industrial landscape into a New Contemporary Melbourne. The
realization of the opportunity to be part of this process
is one that excites and inspires the mind of the contemporary
sculptor.
I would like to thank MAB Corporation for their unerring support
for this the first Festival, as well as, all the sponsors
and the traders. It is never easy to start such an event and
without their generous support it would never have been possible.
